When she was only 19, she tried out for a shampoo commercial conducted by Zhang Yimou. But Yimou was using it as a screen test to find the perfect actress for his following film. Luck favored Zhang and she got selected for the lead role in ‘The Road Home’.

The movie wasn’t only her debut film but it won the reputable Silver Bear Prize at the 2000 Berlin International Film Festival.

It even earned her the Best Actress Award at the 2000 Hundred Flowers Awards. Her international popularity esteemed with her industrious performance in the martial arts movie ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’.
