Lay already had a penchant for performing ever since he was young. His first major appearance was a performance in Jimmy Lin’s variety show back in 2000 when he was still nine years old.

Prior to joining EXO, he was already popular in his hometown as a local celebrity.

In 2005, he placed third in Star Academy, a popular television show in the Hunan province. After his stint in the program, he also was invited in other shows such as Ce Yue Yue Xin Kai and Na Ke Bu Yi Yang (which was hosted by popular celebrity Liu Na).

Lay also tried his luck in acting by auditioning for the 2007 television series The Duke of Mount Deer but was unfortunately not included in the final cut.

In 2008, Lay auditioned and passed SM Entertainment’s Global Auditions in Changsha. He was still sixteen years old when he traveled to Korea for training.

He spent four years of rigorous training under the company before debuting as a part of EXO.

As a trainee, he has made appearances in some of the company’s concerts, particularly during SHINee’s world tour from 2010 – 2011 where he temporarily stood in as a dance replacement for Jonghyun (who was recovering from an injury at that time).

Lay was formally introduced as a member of EXO on Jan 17 , 2012. He is the main dancer of EXO.

A series of teasers were released to introduce the members of the group to the world prior to EXO’s grand and anticipated debut in 2012. Lay’s teaser came out in January 16, 2012 and featured him dancing to “Phoenix” along with two other backup dancers.

EXO released their buzz singles “What is Love” and “History” in January and March 2012, respectively, and they was followed by their official debut with the single “MAMA” in April of the same year.

As a member of the unit group which performs for the Chinese audience, Lay and the rest of EXO-M had their first live stage at the 2012 Top Chinese Music Awards in Beijing.

Their first EP “MAMA” peaked at number two on Sina Album Charts while the Mandarin version of the music video topped various streaming charts. In April 2012, EXO-M also served as a front act for Super Junior during their Super Show 4 in Indonesia.

EXO-M also performed at “K-Con”, the first K-pop convention in the United States in December 2012.

Exo went to become a huge K-pop phenomenon with the subsequent release of their first full-length album “XOXO” (later on repackaged to “Growl”) in 2013 which sold more than a million copies, a first in 12 years.

This was followed up by Overdose, released in 2014, which became the most pre-ordered mini-album in K-pop history.

Exo released their second full-length album “Exodus” in 2015 which also sold more than a million copies (repackaged included), a rare feat among K-pop acts.

Solo activities as Zhang Yi Xing

With EXO’s popularity blowing up exponentially, Lay was able to expand his activities in China as a solo artist as well.

In June 2014, Lay was appointed as a special host of the Chinese music show “Music Billboard Charts” which went on to become a success.

To help facilitate Lay’s solo activities in China, SM Entertainment helped Lay open up a “Zhang Yixing Studio” in March 2015.

In May 2015, Lay was announced as a cast member of “Go Fighting!”, a popular variety show in China. This was then followed by a starring role in the drama “To Be a Better Man” in August.

Lay also released a semi-autobiographical book called “Standing Firm at 24” which chronicled the 24 best moments in his life. The book went on to become hugely successful despite its limited release.

In the last quarter of 2015, he was also announced to be a part of the movies “Kung Fu Yoga” (with Jackie Chan) and “Unexpected Love” (with f(x)’s Krystal Jung) and “Ex Files 2: The Backup Strikes Back”.

Lay was also casted in the Zhang Zi Yi-produced film “Oh My God” which was premiered in December 2015.

Being popular in China, he then also won an award from the Chinese Music Awards.

After a month, Lay then again appeared in a Chinese TV Drama called “To Be A Better Man”, which also featured a composed song by him

Of course, the song itself was a hit and made it to the top charts in China’s music charts for five consecutive weeks. This is a clear proof of Lay’s hard work.

He did not just succeed in China, but also made it to the top charts in iTunes of Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan, Singapore, HongKong, India, U.S, and Philippines.

People liked his acting skills, offering him another chance to act as a lead role in a Chinese TV Drama called “Mystic Nine”. This TV Show was a big hit, again bringing a huge amount of success and happiness. This TV Drama gained 10 billion viewers.

Lay is indeed talented, as he also released his single called “What U Need?” around October in 2016. Of course, yet again, this song made a big hit and made it to the top of the charts, making him the first ever Chinese singer to make it on the top charts.

He then went to Busan for the Asia Song Festival and performed his newly hit single. After a few days, it was announced that Lay will be releasing his own album. There is no doubt that it will make it to the top charts again.

He then held a meet and greet and a fan meeting at Shanghai. It seems that Lay has been so successful internationally. Fans from all over the world are clearly obsessed with him.

As Lay is now known as one of the most successful Kpop stars, it is said that he broke a record in South Korea, because he is the first ever solo artist to sell 40,000 copies of his album in just a span of a week.

Later, it was confirmed that Lay will yet again become the lead role in the Chinese version of the Japanese drama “Operation Love”.

On the 7th of October 2016, Lay’s fans from all over the world joined forces and gave Lay a huge present that anybody could ever imagine.

Lay is the most liked member of EXO, and he obviously has the most number of fans. His dedicated fans made a big effort by taking out 11 Billboard advertisements in Times Square and replacing it with Lay’s pictures.

This is definitely a huge thing, especially for a Kpop star.

Lay was so grateful for his fans, and he decided to give back in return. He then announced that he will release a solo track, in dedication of his own birthday and the loyalty of his beloved fandom.

Lay Angered Fans By His Inappropriate Instagram Post

A post shared by Zhangyixing (@zyxzjs) on

As there has been problems occurring between the Philippines and China, EXO member Lay posted a photo on instagram, showing a sign of protest and joining his fellow Chinese community.

Not only Lay posted a protest, but other Chinese celebrities as well. They used the hashtag “#ChinaCannotBecomeAnySmaller”. Clearly, many people are opposed to this protest because many people think that China is being selfish.

Some people understood Lay’s protest as an act of dedication and patriotism to his country, but some took it as a inappropriate way to protest.

As China was also claiming a Korean island, fans especially Korean fans got angry and did not understand why Lay would support that protest.

Was it a wrong move for Lay to post this kind of conspiracy?

Lay Falls Unconscious In Airport

A post shared by Zhangyixing (@zyxzjs) on

In October 2016, at Incheon Airport in Korea, EXO member Lay passes out before his flight to Japan.

Lay and his fellow bandmates were about to board for their flight to Japan when suddenly he collapsed and fell unconscious, causing the ambulance to rush and get him to the hospital.

There were a few witnesses on how Lay collapsed. Some said that he was not awake when the paramedics came to get him from the boarding gate.

EXO members, as loyal as they are to each other, waited for Lay to feel better and delay their flight for a few hours. They wanted to fly to Japan complete together.

SM Entertainment, their agency, then clarified “Lay temporarily fainted due to lack of sleep.

Thankfully, the doctor said all he needs is a good rest. Lay will be heading to the dorm to rest.” They also confirmed that Lay will be performing with the band with no absence.

Fans then hurriedly posted and commented on Lay’s social media accounts, voicing out encouraging and supportive messages for Lay to get well soon enough.

But this was not the only problem concerning Lay’s health. Months ago, it was reported that Lay also collapsed due to food poisoning from a Chinese variety show.

Fans were angry at SM Entertainment because they do not seem to be taking care of stars properly.

Lay is graduated from Hunan Normal University High School, it is known that he was really sharp and good in his class and studies.

Lay was raised by his grandparents. According to interviews, they had a hard time communicating when he was in school studying, because they couldn’t understand his passion for music.

Lay and his grandparents have a really good relationship now. He is thoughtful and takes care of them. He is especially careful of his grandmother’s well being, because her legs were injured in a car accident and she can’t strain herself too much.

He has mentioned his mother in interviews. Apparently they don’t communicate so much, and this makes her angry at him. However, they are in a very good relationship, even appearing in interviews together. He is just bad at managing time.

In 2011, prior to debuting with EXO, he briefly worked for SHINee in their concert tour as Jonghyun’s dance replacement.

Lay was ranked 5th on Baidu’s “2014 Top 10 most popular celebrities” list along with label mates, Victoria of f(x) & Lu Han.

In March 2015, S.M entertainment announced that they have established a personal studio for Lay for his individual activities in China.

For the June 19th edition of “Music Bill Board Charts”, Lay was a special temporary Mc.

Lay would also be appearing in his 1st Chinese drama “To Be A Better Man” in 2016 as well as web-drama “Let’s open The Old Nine Gates”.
