Founder of this museum

Nezu museum was founded by Kaichiro Nezu Junior in 1941 in order to exhibit art treasures that his father, Kaichiro Nezu, possessed. Kaichiro Nezu was born in Yamanashi prefecture in 1860.

He became head of TOBU RAILWAY CO.,LTD. And later was called King of Railway. He was keenly interested in an antique work of art since his youth.

Contents of exhibition can be come under 2 categories. One is a variety of Japanese or oriental antique. Another is things of tea celemony. Kaichiro Nezu called himself “Aoyama” and enjoyed tea celemony late in his life.

At the end if March 2011, the amount of art treasures has reached 7414(including 7 national treasures).

Garden of this museum

Nezu museum is the remains of residence of founder Nezu Kaichiro. There is a spacious garden in this museum. In this garden, you can see a variety of stone structure, ponds, small boats and so on.

You are able to enjoy natural scenery and change of seasons in the middle of metropolis.

There is a museum shop in Nezu Museum. You can purchase a variety of original goods. For example, a pictorial record of exhibition, a memorial picture postcard, stationery and other general merchandise.

The most popular item is “KAKITSUBATA-ZU” in this museum. New character goods of which the motif is “Souyouson”, ancient Chinese bronze ware , are provided enrichment.

KAKITSUBATA-ZU AND Korin Ogata

KAKITSUBATA-ZU is a picture drawn on a folding screen which was created in the eighteenth century. The creator is Korin Ogata who was born in Kyoto. KAKITSUBATA is a plant that blossoms from May to Jun with violet flower.

KAKITSUBATA-ZU has been a designated national treasure and has been stored and displayed in Nezu Museum.

Nezu CAFÉ

Nezu café is a coffeehouse located in Nezu Museum. A large part of wall is glass-in. Green color will come into view quickly and sufficiently from the grass-in wall.

Popular dishes are as follows: coffee of the original blend, sweets, meat pie, large volumeBLT sandwich, Nice salada.This cafe also has Powder green tea and cake on its menu.

The outline of this museum’s structure is as follows: Reinforced concrete structure, two-storey above ground and one below, 4000 square meters.

There is a lecture hall on first basement floor, are a museum shop and 4 exhibition rooms on the ground floor, are a rouge in the upper floor in front and are 3 exhibition rooms on the second floor.

KOUHAKUBAI-ZU AND Korin Ogata

KOUHAKUBAI-ZU is a picture drawn on a folding screen which was created at his later years. It is said that this paint is the best masterpiece of Korin Ogata.

There are old trees and white blossom tree and red blossom of ume on the left side of this work of art, are young trees and red blossom of ume and are a river between them which symbolizes the stream of time. It is said that the contrast of these elements is splendid.

Government figures visited Nezu Museum

9th March in 2015, Angela Merkel prime minister of Germany visited Nezu Museum with prime minister Shinzo ABE before a top‐level conference. They looked at the exhibition of the buddhist art.

Her request was to contact with Japanese cultures, so they walked through the museum for about 15 minutes to look at pictures and sculptures from Asuka period to Edo period.
